Ethel Rompilla
The Poetry of Color: How the Palette of Fine Art Can Inspire the Interior Designer
Ethel Rompilla, award-winning professor of color theory at New York School of Interior Design, and author of Color for Interior Design, will host a lecture and discussion on the way fine art, both traditional and contemporary, can inspire the designer to take a more poetic, creative approach in selecting colors for interiors. This idea has been around since the late 19th century, when the British architect, Sir John Soane, created what he called "the poetry of architecture" by combining classical details with light in a picturesque way. Although there are obvious differences between fine art and interiors, they share many common elements: color, pattern, texture, composition and light. And both have similar goals: to please or engage the eye and to spark the imagination of the viewer or occupant. This beautifully illustrated lecture will be followed by an opportunity for discussion and further exploration of the dynamic uses of color.
